Stress Relief

Stress relief is a hard to achieve goal in this day and age. I think we can agree on that! We are surrounded by things and situations that can easily push us over the edge. It becomes overwhelming. This newsletter style website was created to give you some simple ideas on how to understand and reduce your stress to get relief.

The first thing to understand is the different types of stress you encounter. If you can identify the type and source of your stress, you have a better chance to get relief. First let’s define it.

Ever since the term was first coined in 1936, there’s been an ongoing debate about the definition of stress. People think of it in different ways and often think that stress relief in today’s world isn’t possible. But the truth is that stress is real and can have serious effects on your health if left unmanaged.

Endocrinologist Hans Selye invented the term “stress” in 1936. He defined it as “the nonspecific response of the organism to any pressure or demand.” Later on, as he progressed in his studies, he modified the definition to: “The rate of wear and tear on the body.” While these are very general definitions, they are accurate in describing how it is seen.

Stress is basically the result of a person’s inability to cope. Whether you have an urgent project that needs to be done immediately or you’re going through an emotional crisis, the effect stress will have on you will depend on how well you can cope with that situation.

Do you feel that you can handle it? Or is it too much? Because the emotional response is such an important aspect of stress, this more modern definition may be better: Stress refers to any reaction to a physical, mental, social, or emotional stimulus that creates a response or alteration to the way we perform, think, or feel.

If the failure to adapt to a situation exists, this results in stress. In many cases, stress occurs if we are encountering something new or unknown. But stress isn’t always originated by a failure to adapt. Pushing yourself to complete a presentation or even the thrill of landing that new job you wanted can cause your body to experience stress. Finding a good strategy to achieve stress relief can significantly reduce the negative effects of stress.

Next we need to understand the different types of stress, Eustress, Distress, Acute and Chronic Stress and PTSD. To start, here are some brief definitions:

From the Greek eu, meaning good, Eustress is what Hans Selye called the good or positive side of stress. It’s the kind of pressure that pushes you without scaring or confusing you. A good example is the feeling of getting a new job. You will feel like there are now more responsibilities and demands on you.

If the stress is accompanied by an inability to cope with a situation, it’s called Distress. Distress is characterized by negative effects on the body and mind, especially in the long-term when there is no stress relief.

Acute stress is a condition that comes from fear. An acute stress response is defined by the experience of a threatening, frightening situation. Being in a serious car accident is a good example.

Chronic stress refers to a continuous state of Distress, which our autonomic nervous system ignores so it can’t trigger a relaxation response. Chronic stress feels like an endless state in which the sufferer is affected by overwhelming situations repeatedly.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious manifestation of stress that needs psychological intervention and treatment. PTSD can be triggered at any age, and is usually a response to a major trauma, such as sexual abuse, physical assault, natural disasters, accidents, or war.

Now that you have the definitions, let’s find some stress relief!

Affirmations for Stress Relief

I’m sure you’ve heard of affirmations before. Their use has been around for many years for everything from better health to more wealth, increased self confidence, and more, including for stress relief. Almost any problem you can experience can benefit from the right affirmation. So why do they work?

They work on the premise that the thoughts you dwell on create your mood and life experience. If the thoughts running through your head are constantly negative, your experiences in life will be more negative than positive. I’m sure you’ve also heard of the Law of Attraction. Basically the Law of Attraction says that what you think about is what you get. It may not be what you want, but it is what you are thinking about so it’s what becomes real in your life.

For example, if your financial situation is a cause of your stress, then thinking about how little money you have won’t help for stress relief. That style of thinking actually works against you by attracting more financial problems. Have you ever noticed that several unexpected expenses come up all at the same time? On a deep subconscious level, your thinking is bringing these things to the surface all at once. And it’s really hard to change your thinking!

Affirmations help you change the pattern of your thoughts. Instead of dwelling on thoughts like:

  • I don’t have enough money
  • I won’t be able to pay my bills this month
  • I will never get out of debt

Think affirmations for stress relief instead:

  • All the money I need flows into my life
  • My bills always get paid on time
  • Abundance and prosperity are part of my life

Most people when they start to use affirmations say: “But I don’t believe it, how can it work?” That’s part of the process of changing your thinking. You may not know how the money will flow into your life or how abundance will manifest itself, but somehow it just happens. One day you’ll think to yourself: “Hey, my bills did get paid on time this month!” And when you reach that point, you’re on the uphill stretch that takes you from negative to positive and things just keep getting better.

There are a lot of books available to help you learn about the Law of Attraction and positive affirmations. Here are a few I recommend:

The Law of Attraction

This is the original book.

Jack Canfield’s Key to Living the Law of Attraction

You know Jack Canfield from his amazingly successful Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books.

The Secret Movie

This very popular movie is based on the Law of Attraction in action. It’s available on DVD and instant download.

Affirmations for Stress Relief

And I found this really cool 99¢ Kindle book which puts a different and funny twist on the negative thoughts in our heads. It definitely makes me smile. (If you don’t have a Kindle you can get one when you look at the book’s description. They have really come down in price recently. Or you can download a free Kindle Reading app to read it on your PC or another device.)

So try affirmations for stress relief and see what results you can get. It can only help!

The Main Enemy of Stress

I have found that stress relief can be achieved by the simple act of taking action! One of the side effects of stress is it paralyzes you. You don’t know where to turn, what to do, how to get relief. You just want to go back to bed and pull the covers over your head. Just the simple step of taking some form of action can be the answer you need.

As I’ve mentioned in another post, being able to identify the source of your stress is extremely helpful. When you have an idea of what is holding you back, then you can take specific action to get the stress relief you need.

But what if you can’t figure it out? What if it’s not that simple to identify? Then just taking any type of action can really help. Doing something concrete can get you up and moving. It can break that paralysis and get you in a more positive frame of mind. From there it’s easier to move forward in your life and perhaps identify the source of your stress.

Usually I find doing something I’ve been procrastinating about gives me the best stress relief. Even if what I do doesn’t have anything to do with what is stressing me, the action helps. I feel like I’ve accomplished something at the end of my day. I feel more in control and of course one hard to do thing is crossed off my list.

So try it for yourself. When you feel stuck and need some stress relief right now, take action! It’s the best enemy of stress I know.

Video For Stress Relief

In a previous post I talked about the benefits of laughing for stress relief. There are many things that can make you laugh. One of the most popular these days is video. There are tons of videos out there that will appeal to any type of sense of humor whether you like comedy routines, slapstick, or cute animals. I have always liked impressionists. Anyone out there remember Rich Little? Growing up he totally amazed me with how many people he could sound exactly like. OK, I’ve just dated myself, but that’s all right!

Well anyway, recently I found another excellent impressionist who really made me laugh. His name is Jim Meskimen and he does an amazing alphabet using a different celebrity voice for each letter. It really made me smile so I’d like to share it with you.

Watch and have a good laugh for stress relief today!

Take a Relaxation Stress Relief Break

We all need to take a relaxation stress relief break when we can. It’s definitely worth the effort to fit it in to our schedules. And it doesn’t have to take long. Just a few minutes can give us the break we need.

With that in mind, I created a 3 ½ minute video with the purpose of creating a simple and easy relaxation stress relief break for you to use when you need it. The photographs in the video were taken by my good friend Dianna Gutoski. She lives in Arizona which has the most spectacular rainbows I’ve ever seen! She does an awesome job of capturing them with her camera and no, they are not PhotoShopped! Those are real double rainbows.

The music is by my friend and colleague Rob Passow who I talked about in a previous post. For this video I chose his original song Sun Through the Clouds to complement Dianna’s photos.

So take a relaxation stress relief break today and enjoy!

Beautiful Stress Relief Music

Some of my favorite and most effective stress relief music was written by a good friend and colleague of mine, Robert Cox Passow. Of course the connection we have helps how I feel about his music, but the music stands on its own and gets my highest recommendation for general listening and especially for stress relief. He has two albums available, both as MP3 downloads and one also as a CD.

The first one he created is called Sun Through the Clouds. It’s all original music created electronically. He’s an organist, pianist, singer and cellist, but he chose to do his music electronically for the variety of sounds he could create. And that’s one of the best aspects of the music for me.

With stress relief music, you want variety, interest, calming and at times uplifting songs. He creates this beautifully with his compositions. His choice of orchestration really helps convey the mood of the song and therefore influence my mood. I especially like to listen to his music when I work. It keeps me focused and from panicking at all I have to do some days. And as a matter of fact I’m listening to it now while I write this!

On this album you’ll find the title song Sun Through the Clouds, Butterfly Garden, and one of my favorites, Do Bears Dance in the Woods? Isn’t that a great title? There are 11 tracks on the full album.

His second collection of music came out about 3 years later. It’s called Colour My World and contains 12 tracks. This one is different in that he has done arrangements of existing music along with his own compositions. Some of it you will be familiar with like Over the Rainbow and the title song Colour My World. Some of it you may not be so familiar with like Sicut Cervus and Jesu Dulcis Memoria.

Now at this point you may be asking, so where do I get this great music? Click on any of the links in this post and you’ll go to that item’s page on Amazon.com. All of these are also available on CD Baby and iTunes.

You also might like to know that Rob has his own radio station at Live365. Live365 is an Internet Radio station that allows people to create their own station. You can listen online or download a player. They have a free version that plays ads and a very affordable VIP program that plays your selected station without ads. Rob’s station is called Generally Gentle Radio. On it he plays his own music as well as that of others. The style is Classical and New Age.

So when you can, take some time to listen and relax a bit. I hope you like his music as much as I do and I hope we don’t have to wait much longer for his next album of beautiful stress relief music!
